Catamount Community Radio - June 6, 2010

"Put on your socks,
comb your locks
and let's go!"

I noticed something odd last Sunday and this one too: there are usually scores of squirrels running around outside the station, even a groundhog. The last two weeks, no fauna at all. What's up with that? Did they spray some nasty chemicals around or something? I mean, the squirrels make me nervous, but their absence is even wore disquieting.

Anyhoo, it's been hot, 90º today, and even last night, when I awoke in the middle of the night, I looked at my alarm clock, which has a thermometer, and saw that it was 75º. All this to say that I had an excuse (not that i needed one) to play Hendrix's "Long, Hot Summer Night."

If I were accused of playing old music at the expense of new music, I would have to plead guilty as charged. But in my defense, I played some new music today, most of it I was hipped to listening to a radio show on WFMU: Bethany Ryker's Stochastic Hit Parade. As a bonus, I learned a new word: "stochastic," and then subsequently forgot the meaning. Well, actually, I remembered the meaning, "random," but forgot the word. I learned about the wonderful soundtrack to Shutter Island, from which I played a brilliant mash-up of Max Richter and Dinah Washington. I learned about a goofy, (I'm assuming) Australian band, Puta Madre Brothers, described as

THE WORLD'S LAST SURVIVING TRIPLE ONE-MAN-BAND PACK A DRUNKEN PUNCH OF MARIACHI ROCK N ROLL SOUL MUSIC FOR YOUR HOME DANCEFLOOR. DIRTY INFECTIOUS MEXIMOTOWN AND SPAGHETTI WESTERN SOUL!

Sorry about the caps, it's a cut and paste job. So, also I learned about an English group, Polar Bear, which apparently consists of two tenor saxes, an upright bass, drums, and a cat who plays guitar and/or sounds on his Mac laptop.

Besides that, a lot of old music.
