Japan 14: De Moraes on the Futon

"The Japanese bed is extended at night, any place in the living room where it is most agreeable to the one who will sleep. In the morning it is taken away and the quilts are doubled up and kept in a closet put aside for that purpose; everything disappears from sight ... I like [the futon]. To me the European bed now seems a dangerous place, as it presents a precipice only a palm and a half from the nose! ... In the Japanese bed, space has no limits ... I spread my books, my pipe, watch, and so forth, so that anything will be at hand to satisfy me in an interval between my naps. How nice it is!"
